I have a lot of CIE 0580 IGCSE maths students and post-pandemic I noticed an increase in the number of students from conventional schools were disappointed with their declining grades. They will tell you that their level of mathematical ability has dropped. It is very disheartening for them. It is not only the international maths students who are suffering. What follows applies to maths students across the board.

Personally, I love both teaching and learning online, whether it be one-to-one or even in small groups. Provided the teacher is properly equipped and organized 'online' has clear advantages. Still, those years of lockdowns and online Zoom classes for 30+ school-age children have taken their toll. The school system was unable to react with sufficient speed to the pandemic crisis. Today we are witnessing the long-term effects. More people are looking for a maths tutor online.

Parents and students who contact me often express frustration that their foundational skills are inadequate for the material they are presented with in class. Students have not just lost effective study time, they have also lost a significant amount of knowledge. If you have heard of 'summer slide', this is a similar phenomenon - multiplied by 10,
The problem became so chronic that I found it necessary to develop my own system to manage it. Middle-school students need to be re-presented with basic numeracy and algebra , but without babying them. We don't have two or three years in hand to go back to square one, yet these skills are foundational and as such cannot be dismissed.

Re-teaching the mathematical content is only a part of the job. It's important I explain to them why they are having problems and how it is not their fault. That said they are going to have to work hard to recover the situation, regardless of their prior level of ability. It is a team effort and we are all on the same side - student, parent and maths tutor. We want the student to win.
For some, this has turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The school system has taken years to develop and to fine-tune, so it is naturally slow to react in general. Following the pandemic there is now a real fear of failure amongst students and parents. Time is of the essence. We can't afford to be teaching maths as if painting by numbers. Yes ,lessons need to be planned but there is a degree of freedom required for people who know what they are doing. We all want the short-version.
All is not lost, though. Ending on a high note, time spent in re-learning basic numeracy and algebra can contribute to an accelerated progression through more complex topics. It happens as a consequence of students learning more deeply. There are more opportunities to pull topics together and for them to view the whole course more cohesively.

"My son needed some extra support in Maths and Dawn came into our lives. She is extremely patient and very knowledgeable.

Dawn goes the extra mile and communicates regularly with me if she feels there is an issue and also to celebrate when things are finally sinking in.

The big exams are just around the corner but having Dawn’s additional support has given our son the confidence he needs! Thank you Dawn"
